These insects overwinter in uncultivated places such as the Sierra foothills, where they pick up the virus by feeding on infected plants. In spring, when wild vegetation begins to dry up, they migrate to the Central Valley. Leaf roll is a very common disorder in many varieties of tomatoes grown in California. It does not develop markedly on plants until about the time of fruit-setting of the first and second flower clusters. Its cause is not fully understood.
