  4. Oh Nuts: Multi Resource Hickories

    Dave's Garden &bull Dec 20, 2011

I had the good fortune to receive a few large bags of fresh shagbark hickory nuts from a dear friend (thanks Pam!). Hickory nuts are very hard and small, and not worth the effort to extract the nutmeats for some people. I adore their unique aroma and flavor, so I disagree. The best tasting varieties of hickories are the shagbark, Carya ovata; shellbark, Carya laciniosa; and mockernut, Carya alba. Other varieties can be bitter and not be worth your trouble. Hickory trees can hybridize in the wild making identification difficult, so consult a tree guide to get a better idea… Full Story »

  5. From Compost to Compost

    Garden Rant &bull Dec 16, 2011

I've always taken a very relaxed approach to composting. If it's organic and it's not something the chickens find delectable, it goes in the pile. Ten years ago, a friend gave me a copy of Joan Dye Gussow's delightful garden... Full Story »

  15. Gardening with Chickens as Sustainable Partners

    Veggie Gardening Tips &bull Oct 14, 2011

I never had much interest in gardening with chickens, ducks, rabbits, or any animal livestock. But today I'll share what's forced me to take a closer look at the benefits, sustainability, and self-sufficiency that maintaining a flock can add, and to admit that there is a lot to be gained by sharing a garden with chickens. It all started at a PASA conference where I met Harvey Ussery and sat in on a presentation that detailed a winter greenhouse setup that incorporated a manure filled worm bin underneath,… Full Story »
