Put Those Tools To Bed for Winter
Dave's Garden &bull Dec 8, 2011
I divide this job into three parts, my power tools such as mowers, tillers and blowers, hand tools such as shovels, pruners, trowels etc. The third category is a catch-all for the remaining "stuff" such as hoses, sprinklers systems, fountains and the like. There are two schools of thought regarding overwintering of fuel; drain the tank or add a fuel stabilizer. I've tried both and… Full Story »

Snakes in the garden
Gardeners' World &bull Dec 2, 2011
I've never had much luck with snakes. I've never found them in gardens, or encountered them on country walks. Once, on a school trip to Pembrokeshire, I found a dead snake in the road. I was fascinated by this black,… Full Story »

Thoughts on Organic Gardening
Vegetable Gardener - Go-organic &bull Nov 24, 2011Organic gardening" is a term that's gone from hip buzzword to nearly completely invisible in a sentence simply because the term feels overused. This is a shame because organic gardening really does make a difference no matter how lack-luster the phrase sounds today. So, why practice organic gardening? The most obvious is probably the best reason; utilizing as many organic… Full Story »

Replica (and Not)
New York Botanical Gardens - Plant Talk &bull Nov 8, 2011
The sandy soil, the boggy ponds: whenever I feel an inexplicable sense of geographic safety (say, in parts of Cape Cod, coastal North Carolina, or Florida), I understand soon enough that I'm looking at a replica of my childhood backyard-or… Full Story »

Coloring Up
The Vermont Gardener &bull Sep 28, 2011

Man It's Hot
Gardening at Draco &bull Jul 20, 2011
It's not only hot but it's dry as well. I have only had 1 7/8" of rain here since the first of the year. I'm praying that the well holds up so we have water to the house. Having the 24,000 gallon rain water collection system makes me feel better about watering the plants. This being the first year to really use it I haven't been watering any more than normal. Normal for me is letting a lot of plants die as I am a… Full Story »

How far we've come in garden philosophy|Cheryl Hazeltine insight
Central Texas Gardener Blog &bull Jul 14, 2011
We take a lot of things for granted. Uh, like rain. Long ago, I learned that just because my cenizo blooms, it doesn't mean rain: it's just humid. This time, it wasn't even that humid. It was just time to show off, especially after that one precious rain we got. But when I started gardening, it would have been as rare as rain to find a cenizo in a nursery. Commonly called Texas sage, originally we knew it for its lavender flowers. Now, you can find many bloom colors on cultivars that promote very silvery leaves or a smaller growth… Full Story »

A Day With P. Allen Smith at Moss Mountain Farm - Part II
Our Little Acre &bull Jun 11, 2011
Playing in the gardens with other fanatical gardeners and garden writers is such a fun thing to do and we got the chance to do plenty of that at Garden2Blog. The fact that we were doing it in P. Allen Smith's gardens (with P. Allen Smith!) made it even more special. After spending a day with him, touring other gardens and sharing good food, we got to know Allen and his staff a bit better, and that made our day at the Garden Home Retreat feel like we were visiting good friends. The entire experience had a family reunion feel… Full Story »
